Physical Education at Anton Junior School
Intent
Learning in Physical Education is underpinned by our School’s Values and by the National Curriculum. Anton Junior School’s children will experience a variety of physical opportunities both within PE lessons, at break time and lunchtime, and through competitive opportunities in and outside of school allowing them to be active. From our curriculum, pupils will become physically literate through experiencing a range of activity areas that:
Implementation
At Anton Junior School, physical education is an integral part of our curriculum, it is inclusive, and engages all pupils. Class teachers and the school’s Sports Coach have a wealth of expertise leading high-quality PE lessons twice a week, covering at least two different sports/activities per half-term. Classes follow the PE long term planning which is adapted to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports and activities. Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and age appropriate sports. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities, which enables all children to achieve their personal best. The PE lead and Sports Coach regularly monitor, support and coach teachers and LSAs to ensure their knowledge is up to date and consistent. Teachers use, and adapt, whole school PE planning and resources to ensure lessons across each year group show progression in line with the PE progression of skills document.
Children participate in competitive sport and we teach them to display our PE vision of educating all children into all activities, ensuring they think for themselves, to become curious, to engage with life imaginatively and discover their own minds, to establish their own values and measures of success. A strong emphasis is also placed on our school values: Kindness and respect, Innovation and love of learning, Aspiration, Resilience and independence, Pride. These competitions, both inter and intra school, are linked to the other Andover schools, wider into Hampshire and if successful in the Hampshire School Games. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives. All classes participate in a variety of activities to help students meet the 30 minutes of daily physical activity at school, for example, Forest school, Gardening club, Orienteering and a variety of other activities. Our Sports Coach, including our year 5/6 Sports Leaders, are tasked with organising physical activities and small games for children to interact with at lunchtime. Swimming is an important life skill; we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres. The children undertake swimming for ten weeks in Year 6 and where needed will be topped up. Children in Year 6 participate in Bike Ability sessions, Year 4 in an off-site residential at Grittleton House and Year 6 in an off-site Residential at Calshot in the summer term.
We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for living an active lifestyle. We want our children to grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being which will ensure they possess the skills necessary to support them in the classroom and beyond.
We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. As a school, we will always endeavour to make appropriate adjustments to ensure all children have the opportunity to take part in events and extra-curricular activities. Annually, the school celebrates Sports Day to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in a wide range of inclusive, competitive activities, sports and festivals.
Impact
The impact of our school Physical Education curriculum can be seen through the demonstration of knowledge and the application of skills in lessons. The impact of the sports premium funding is explained with our online document. We motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. We see this applied through the children participating in a variety of competiveness school sports (football, netball, hockey, basketball) and active playtimes.
From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom will enjoy the success of competitive sports.
